I had set a target months earlier to depart by Memorial Day weekend to take advantage of the public holiday and 3-day weekend. Fortunately everything fell in place and we were able to depart on schedule. Our first leg was chosen somewhat arbitrarily... I had not had time to completely top off the tanks, so I didn't want to push for max range, and anyway there was a line of impassable weather (that would pass over us that evening) just beyond Huntsville, so that would be our spot that set us up for a long day on Saturday. The rough initial plan was 'somewhere in Alabama', Omaha, Fargo, Winnipeg, and then onward...
I wanted to get a head start on crossing the continent and maximize our long weekend so we logged off work a couple hours early on Friday and headed to the airport and loaded up to depart.
We got airborne just after 4:30pm. The flight was an easy one, with the Central Florida weather unusually clear of afternoon thunderstorms. I always feel a nervous excitement when leaving on one of these trips, and this one was especially exciting. As we rolled for takeoff, got airborne, and turned northbound, I thought about how I would not see my home airport for a long time.
We got to Huntsville just before the FBO closed in the evening, and were greeted very unexpectedly with the sight of Fifi, the B-29, on the ramp! We of course had to check it out...
Afterwards, we got our Uber and checked into our hotel. Nothing else was easily walkable nearby, so Katherine and I decided to try to walk to Taco Bell for dinner along a pretty busy highway.
