Summer afternoon weather in Florida will always be a concern, so I was anxious to get started early. In the interest of preserving our precious vacation days, we took a half day to start the trip and planned to make the long jump all the way to Baltimore for the first day. Since Baltimore is just beyond my comfortable un-refueled range, I decided to stop somewhere (Suffolk, VA) along the way to refuel and have a bathroom break. We departed Orlando IFR just about noon, and did a little light dodging of the rapidly building thunderstorms along our route. There was a stationary front hanging out near the coast of South Carolina, so all the storms were hanging right near the shore. Got a reroute and stayed west of them. Weather in Virginia was muggy but clear skies. Got the visual into Suffolk County and parked to get fuel. Unfortunately since this was a Thursday afternoon, the airport BBQ restaurant was closed, but the owner was still there and offered us free bags of chips and fountain drinks while we relaxed outside for an hour or so.
