Waking up on Monday morning (4th of July), the weather was absolutely clear and beautiful, perfect for the Hudson SFRA. I had done a little research the night before and I was trying to decide the best place to spend July 4th. I settled on Newport, Rhode Island, which wasn't too far away. For our departure and trip through the Hudson SFRA, I had done my research and had the FAA Safety Team kneeboard printed out, and I was ready for a seriously insane amount of traffic. Departing TEB was rather interesting, since I had planned to simply depart VFR Northeast to Alpine Tower and begin the SFRA corridor from there. TEB Ground, however, seemed to expect to run things more like a Class C, and gave me a squawk on the ground just to depart the Delta. In any case, it was no big deal, we got out, they had us dodge this way and that to avoid inbound jet traffic, and then they sent us direct to Alpine Tower and turned us loose. I joined the river and switched over to Hudson CTAF. There were probably only 4 or 5 airplanes out there this morning, and probably a lot more helicopters. Overall it wasn't a difficult experience due to the low traffic, and we made our way down to the Statue, did one orbit, and then headed back North. After clearing the SFRA to the north, we step climbed up and proceeded VFR to Newport, RI. We landed, they helped us find parking, I paid our (modest) landing fee, and then we got an Uber into town. The hotel here was expensive (!), but it was the 4th and Newport is obviously a very fancy place. We did have a great time though, walking around, exploring the mansions (including The Breakers), and then watching the 4th of July fireworks in a city park.
