By Wednesday it looked like Thursday was a great day to return to the US. The weather on Thursday afternoon looked rather menacing, with a front moving through, but there was an opening that morning to come back. I decided we would re-enter in Burlington, VT. So I filed our eAPIS again, called US CBP at Burlington, and arranged a taxi (don't trust Uber!) for 6:30am. We met our taxi on Thursday morning, and rode through the rain back to the airport. There was an amusing mistake at the airport when I went to pay my fees (3 overnights, no fuel) and they were nearly $2500 because they had miscategorized my airplane as a G-IV jet. That was quickly corrected, but it was still about $300 CAD for 3 nights! (I knew this in advance, but still, it was by far the most expensive FBO fees I have yet paid) Anyway, wife and dog waited in the FBO while I preflighted in the rain, and when I was ready I called them out. It was very cold with light rain, and we had a relatively easy (smooth) IFR departure out of Quebec. Lots and lots of enroute IMC on the way to Burlington, but overall it was a short flight and we landed in much better (MVFR and improving) weather over at Burlington. For once, the US CBP officer there was extremely friendly and after he cleared us in he chatted with us about our trip while we watched a couple dozen F-35s departing from the Air National Guard base. We got a taxi into town and quickly booked a hotel on the way. (Burlington is expensive!) We grabbed some beers at a local brewery and of course some ice cream. For dinner I managed to finally try Heady Topper IPA from The Alchemist, which was excellent.
