Up before dawn... we had only gotten back to Orlando the night before around midnight from our friend Abel's wedding in Ft. Lauderdale. I had been watching the prog charts for several days leading up to the trip, so I knew there was a relatively brief window of nice (60s-70s, mostly sunny) weather in Toronto coming in the next few days. Ordinarily we would take our time, but not being able to leave until Sunday meant pushing all the way to Niagara Falls in one day, spending the night, and making the short hop into Canada the following morning.

Surface Analysis

Unfortunately, a weak front lay between us and Niagara Falls, and was making its way across the Appalachians, with a lot of IMC and icing potential at 9k and above. Additionally, we would also be battling strong (>40kts) headwinds for much of the trip north. Fortunately, the forecasts called for the broken layers to become few and sunny weather by the afternoon, so I decided it was worth setting out north and waiting to see how the weather evolved at our fuel stop(s).

Although I had hoped to make our first fuel and lunch stop in West Virginia, the strong headwinds and weather necessitated stopping well short, in the Augusta area. We got going and took off just at dawn and made a very uneventful (and severe clear) first leg to Georgia, battling headwinds that were, at times, even worse than forecast.
